Georgia, the home state of Speaker Newt Gingrich, went unsurprisingly for the former speaker with a 47% to 26% margin over the next closest competitor Gov. Romney. As was the case with South Carolina, a strong showing of Republicans (73% of the electorate), pushed their weight to the tune of 50% behind Speaker Gingrich with no other candidate reaching more than 25% of Republicans. Independents made up 23% of the overall voters with the largest portion (41%) going for Gingrich. Representative Ron Paul picked up his largest portion of voters once again from the independents with 16%, although his overall takeaway was insignificant. With former Speaker Gingrich campaigning heavily in his home state while his competitors all but conceding the competition to the hometown favorite, the state was all but decided before voters went to the polls.
